How to Record Glitch Art

Capturing your glitch art output is essential for sharing and archiving. Several methods exist, each with different tradeoffs.

USB Capture Cards

The most common method. Plug your device’s output into a capture card, which appears as a video source on your computer. The IO Data GV-USB2 is the community favorite for its ability to handle unstable signals. Generic cards work but may drop signal during extreme glitching.

CRT Rescanning

Point a camera at a CRT display showing your glitch art. This captures the analog character of the CRT — scan lines, phosphor glow, color bleeding — adding another layer of aesthetic quality. Requires careful camera selection, lens choice, and synchronization to avoid flicker.

Direct to Tape

Record to VHS or other tape formats. Adds tape artifacts and degradation as another creative element. Requires a VCR or tape deck with recording capability.

Tips

  • Higher-quality capture cards handle unstable signals better
  • Record at the highest quality your system can handle — you can always compress later
  • Keep your signal chain as clean as possible between your last glitch device and your capture point
  • Consider using a TBC before your capture device if signals are very unstable
