What is Keying?

Keying allows you to composite video layers by making parts of one layer transparent based on color (chroma key) or brightness (luma key).

Chroma Key

Removes a specific color — the classic “green screen” effect. In glitch art, chroma keying lets you layer multiple glitched sources together, using color information to determine which source shows through.

Luma Key

Removes based on brightness. Dark areas or bright areas become transparent, allowing another video source to show through. Luma keying with glitched sources creates dynamic, evolving composites where the glitch patterns themselves determine the layering.

Creative Applications

Both keying types are powerful when combined with feedback loops and multiple glitch sources. The key parameters can be adjusted in real-time for performative layering.
